— B CORP CERTIFICATION
B Corp has always
been rigorous.
V2.1 made it more so.
B Corp certification is widely recognised as the gold standard for purpose-driven business. And in 2025, B Lab released Standards V2.1 — the most significant update in the certification's history. The way companies are assessed, what they're required to demonstrate, and how certification is verified have all changed.
That's not a reason to step back. It's a reason to get the right guidance from the start.
— WHAT IT ACTUALLY MEANS
More than a badge.
A verified commitment.
B Corp has always required genuine performance — not just intent. Under V2.1, that bar is higher and more rigorously verified than ever before.
In short: if your business earns it, it means something.
Purpose and Stakeholder Governance
Companies act in accordance with a defined purpose and embed stakeholder governance in decision making.
Government Affairs and Collective Action
Companies play a leadership role in fostering shared understanding and implementing solutions toward an equitable, inclusive, and regenerative economy.
Environmental Stewardship and Circularity
Companies demonstrate environmental stewardship and contribute to the circular economy in their operations and value chain.
B Corp certification is independent, third-party verification that a business meets rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. It's administered by B Lab — a global non-profit — and assessed against the B Lab Standard, a comprehensive framework covering how a business treats its workers, its community, the environment, its customers, and how it's governed.
Under V2.1, certification is no longer about accumulating points across broad categories. It now requires companies to demonstrate compliance across seven mandatory Impact Topics — there's no selective reporting, no cherry-picking the easy areas. Independent auditors verify the evidence. And the standard requires ongoing improvement, not a one-time snapshot.
The seven B Lab Impact topics in the new standards:
Climate Action
Companies take action to combat the climate crisis and its impacts.
Fair Work
Companies provide good quality jobs and have positive workplace cultures.
Justice, Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion
Companies have inclusive and diverse workplaces and contribute to just and equitable communities.
Human Rights
Companies treat people with dignity and respect their human rights.

— THE STANDARDS HAVE CHANGED
What’s different about V2.1
The previous standards were rigorous.
V2.1 is a fundamental rethink of what certification means and how it's verified.
Getting this right takes more than reading the B Lab website. It takes someone who works with the standard every day.
Old model
Score 80 points across five broad impact areas. Companies could perform well in some areas while having blind spots in others.
Under V2.1 — Mandatory compliance
Certification now requires demonstrated compliance across all seven Impact Topics. No selective reporting, no cherry-picking the easy areas.
Under V2.1 — Phased requirements
Mandatory Year 0 requirements apply from day one, with additional obligations phasing in at Year 3 and Year 5.
Under V2.1 — Independent verification
Evidence needs to be current, credible, and sufficient. All certification is verified by independent third-party auditors.
Under V2.1 — Ongoing improvement
Certification isn't a one-time milestone. Ongoing improvement is built into the standard — required, not optional.
— WHY GUIDANCE MATTERS
1100+ PAGES OF B LAB STANDARDS V2.1
The B Lab Standards
are not light reading.
The B Lab Standards V2.1 documentation runs across seven topic-specific frameworks. Each has its own compliance criteria, phased requirements, sector and size variations, and auditor verification expectations. Understanding which requirements apply to your specific business — and what evidence you'll need to demonstrate compliance — is not always straightforward.
I'm a trained B Consultant through B Lab Australia/New Zealand. I work with the B Lab Standard as a living document, not a summary. That means the guidance I give you is specific, accurate, and current — not based on how B Corp used to work.
Working with me means you don't spend months preparing for certification only to discover gaps you could have addressed from the start. And it means you go into the verification process with confidence, not crossed fingers.
